Neil,

I assume you know what VHS is, the basic standard home video tape recording used in millions of homes around the world.

S-VHS is a better quality than VHS using the same sized tapes but slightly better quality tapes. S-VHS can only be recorded on S-VHS recorders, (which can also record basic VHS)

D-VHS is a digital recording on the same sized tapes but utilizing MPEG2 compression. This is far better quality than both VHS and S-VHS but the tapes can only be played on a D-VHS machine. (a D-VHS machine can also record and play back in VHS and S-VHS mode).

I am sure someone else can give a more detailed explanation.
