Subject: *NTSC* on UK JVC HR-DM10000

I've just sent this question to JVC - anyone have any ideas? I was surprised that the UK model is capable of recording NTSC, it's just not being displayed properly!!

Dear Sir / Madam

I would like to ask a very technical question about the digital VHS recorder
model HR-DM10000. I have had the opportunity to use the deck, and noticed
the following.

When recording in digital mode, if given an NTSC signal (PAL 60 actually)
the picture was recorded ok, including colour as it was a PAL 60 image.
When this was played back the picture was slightly squashed up with a blank
area to the bottom of the screen.
This is to be expected as an NTSC signal has less lines than a PAL signal
but I would like to ask if there's any way (e.g. in a service menu) that
it can be told to display only the 525 or so lines for an NTSC image.
I don't know if the extra lines are recorded or not, but as the frame
rate difference is automatically adjusted (60 frames per second for NTSC
instead of 50 frames per second for PAL), I'm hoping this is only on playback.

I know the hardware involved in mpeg 2 compression and decompression is
both NTSC and PAL compatable, which would mean that even if the above
option is not available it could be enabled through a simple firmware update.

I know that there is a market for NTSC capability in the UK - why else
would there be so many players with NTSC playback! And the above option
would enable people to archive their ntsc tapes to digital format and
this would result in more sales to people like myself.

Your hopefully
Jason
