Subject: JVC says "you must use JVC tapes with DVL-9800"

Hello everybody,

I bought in May 2000 a camcorder JVC GR-DVL-9800 EG under 1 year JVC guarantee extended to 2 years by the seller. I’ve just taken that camera to be repaired for the third time and for the same problem consisting in gaps during the sound reproduction. The first two repairs were made in September 2000 > changing of the video head , and two months ago in April 2001, cleaning of the head and the guides.
I specify that I use my camera quite normally (no dust and K7 carefully racked). I don’t make any batch capture, I capture “on-the-fly”, in short: a non-intensive and habitual use by a non-professional.
I’ve already had that problem with nearly new tapes.

I’d like to inform you of the last news from the after sales service registered by JVC in Belgium.
Yesterday, I phoned my seller’s after sales service (I bought my camcorder in an electro-hifi chain shop). After taking the information the employee called me back saying:
- I will inform you of the repair estimate.
- What estimate, Madam? This camera is still guarantee-covered.
- No, no, the failure comes from a bad use of yours.
- What bad use?
Of course, this lady doesn’t know anything about techno and is going to enquire.

Today I call her back and she tells me that JVC refuses the repair under guarantee but the chain are going to make a commercial gesture and take the repairs under their charge. They don’t want any unsatisfied customers.

- Thanks a lot, Madam, but I’d like to have further information about my “bad use”. I’d like to correct my misuse and avoid future problems.

Alas, she is not allowed to give me the phone number of the registered JVC workshop (the technicians would be disturb all the time in their work). But… she’s going to enquire and she will explain to me.
That go-between annoys me. I would prefer to get into contact with the technician who explored the inside of my camcorder.
I investigate and find on the web the addresses of the workshops registered by JVC in Belgium.
Fortunately, at the second call, I come across my repairer.

Hold on tight! The followings are surreal!
He says:
- In September 2000 we had to replace the video head of your camcorder, then in April 2001 we had to clean it. Evidently you don’t use JVC K7 as you were told. You use cassettes which damage your camcorder head.

It’s true. I admit I have other tapes than JVC, some SONY Excellence, PANASONIC and TDK and many EMTEC(BASF). Honestly I’m not going to throw them away. Some of them are not even unpacked.

- This is the cause of your trouble, you must exclusively use JVC cassettes, the only ones which won’t damage your video head. You were already told in September 2000. This time, the head was covered by such a black layer that we didn’t succeed in cleaning it. It must be replaced again and you are lucky the seller takes care of the cost because as far as JVC is concerned this is not guarantee covered. Moreover the instructions leaflet recommends the use of JVC K7 (I verified : it is false. In the leaflet it is recommended – page 3 - to use miniDV K7 without specifying any make).

I show my surprise but as I call him not to quarrel but to enquire, I explain to the man that I have a second camcorder CANON XL- 1 with which I use the same K7 without any trouble.

- I know. We noticed that problem only on JVC camcorders. We are also registered to repair HITACHI and PANASONIC and there is no problem at all if you use others K7.
But the head is so delicate on JVC that, I repeat, you must follow my advice and use only JVC K7. Otherwise you can spare for the next replacing of your video head, there won’t be any guarantee possible.
- So, you advise me to get rid of all my K7 others than JVC.
- Yes sir, I recommend it when you use your camcorder JVC GR-DVL9800.

I admit I am very surprised by this information, I should say astounded because I exchanged mails with MAXELL and EMTEC(BASF) tape-makers and they confirmed that each MiniDV tape-maker must get a licence for their tapes and their products are deeply quality-controlled.
The MAXELL correspondent assured me that he has been using his JVC MiniDV camcorder for four years only with MAXELL K7. Besides neither EMTEC nor MAXELL receive complaints. They say the return is around 0%.

So what ? Who to believe ? What is true ?
I end this long message by two questions:
- What do you think of the advice of getting rid of my X,Y,Z tapes and buying a stock of JVC ones ?
- Has somebody heard of such problems or similar information ?

Thanks for having read such a long message so far.
Thanks for your reactions.

Bye.
Jean-Marie
