I have two JVC HM-DR 10000 (no EU?!) (I can give you, serial number if it helps to locate the production date).
Of course I make a hole (not drilling) in VHS (1,40 Euro)tapes to let the DVHS to keep as SVHS, but then I have good results on recording. May be it happens more often to get ERROR 200 and then ERROR 201 when I start play, but waiting 3-5 sec., I can watch the videos. I've noticed, anyway, that this kind of problems exists on SVHS too (I use always BASF) and even in seldom in DVHS (I think it has to look for a good mpeg2 frame to start). I'm just afraid that may be, that on VHS tapes the digital signals, could be lost along the time easier, but actually I can watch the video recorded more than 1 year ago (even in LS3).

After all I think the the overall quality of tapes have been increased in the last years and that in brand VHS tapes of medum quality, you can find a very high quality tape (may be very close to SVHS) I did a test 10 years ago: I made a hole on a very good Hi-Fi Super High Grade VHS tape, payed 4 times the price of a common VHS and I tried to rec on it in SVHS; negative! what I obtained was just an increase of video noise caused by the attempt to write to an higher video frequency.
Recently I recorded a tape forgetting to press the DVHS button and so it went in SVHS: surprise! the quality was really very good.

Perhaps, some of the first DVHS units do not operate all in the same way (!) and I've been very lucky to have two units working (strange: usually it doesn't happen).
Tell me if you want to know more or if you solve!

Bye.
