Subject: DVD to VHS

I am sure this has been asked a million times. Let me ask again anyway as I was not able to clearly find the answer. I have a bunch of DVDs that i want to make a copy onto VHS tape to play in our minivan. When i tried copying, I got red lines with a lot of dots. Someone told me that I will be able to copy using a TV/VCR combo, but it didn't work. How can I circumvent the problem and make good VHS copies of my DVD? If there is a cheap equipment that I can buy, that'll be helpful.

Thanks
