It is one of the tricks that everybody should use before taping, whether with cassettes or open reels...
Less strain on the tape itself and the mechanism, far less dropouts and no sudden mishmash when taping in digital...
Still, a 420 tape will always be a bit too long and heavy for a transport (any transport) ; for safe archiving, one should stick to 300 (which is already a fat one...)
