Well,
Firewire became the hardware standard for the DV data stream to pass through. It's called Firewire at Apple's (the inventor of it), iLink at Sony's and generic 'DV' elsewhere. Firewire is also used for hard disk to be hooked up to computers.
On the other hand, MPEG plugs are still unknown to the general public and probably to many a professional also.

The DV plug is the tiny little plug located on the back plate of our DVHS machines, close to the scart/composite/svhs plugs ; the MPEG in/out are below, at very bottom of the machine's back, and hidden (in Europe and US) by a thick sticker.

MPEG plugs would probably output the raw MPEG2 stream to be converted elsewhere with the help of an outboard converter (read: expensive - just like a drive and a dac for audiophiles) ; the DV out would probably output a DV stream but this time converted from the internal mpeg processor.

My guess is that this would make the DV stream be coded/decoded twice: data on the DVHS tape having already been encoded in MPEG2, it would then be reencoded to fit the DV stream specs. DV stream is 5:1 and fairly destructive as the data rate is 3,6Mb/s only... I'm not sure this would be a 'transparent' transfer...

But then, if only we could try it!
