Benoît,
Listen closely to the noises the tapes make.
Once stopped -after a full speed partial wind or rewind- if you hear little high-pitched squeaks (as if the tape were being torn), keep cool and do the following:

1. after a winding cycle, press rewind for a LITTLE while then engage play and see if there are any drop outs due the tape having been stopped too harshly.
2. after a rewinding cycle, oh well, do the opposite...

Remember ALWAYS to do a FULL wind & rewind cycle with a new tape and to store your tapes vertically, completely wound at the end, the full 'reel' at the bottom.

Use only PRO S tapes - and pro means the ones sold in hard boxes only.
D decks are pretty finicky and bear little as far as tape quality is concerned (un distributeur à Paris: TRM, dans le 17ème).

Maxell BQ series are the best, followed by Fuji (unavailable in France I believe) and the TDK XP-Pro a close third.

All VHS/SVHS/DVHS (or even DAT for that matter) use the same routines to manage tape movements.
When a deck starts to make funny noises, damaging tapes by stopping too abruptly or becomes slow to the helm, it may need a slight mechanical (re)setup.

Although brand new, my own VR20 does that once in while - even with D tapes...

Compared to other serious decks (such as the Philips VR969 - the one with the clock, or any other semi-pro Panasonic), the mechanism of the VR20 (a JVC really) is pretty unsure, lumpy and makes noises worthy of a very low end vcr.

Use it gently and mostly don't overdo the scan/search functions.
