Actually, I only use s-vhs tapes for temporary recordings (for the ones I want to keep *eternally*, I use S-vhs). And once recorded, I use the convenient tape manager, which progressively slows down, not as abruptly. That's why it only happened to me with s-vhs tapes. But I will make sure I'll be careful with d-vhs ones.

I dit exactly as you suggested, the problem is that, usually, the tape is torn. I think that re/winding the tape may tear it a little more, that's why I usually eject the tape (if the deck didn't already do it by itself just before switching off, probably its normal behaviour when detecting a problem) and gently remove the tape myself.

I think the only solution is to NOT use the fast wind/rewind, but the scan/search instead (which is much slower, and can alter the video heards), or the tape manager... Too bad.
I had a 7 head philips vhs vcr before, with true philips turbo drive mechanism (not jvc ;-{ ), wich seemed much more reliable (it was probably the same as for the vr969).
