The more the merrier!
...more standards = more copy protections = more hackers = more standards to defeat the hackers = etc

DVHS was announced way back in '95 but hit the streets just before DVD came out (in Europe) - it lost.

DVD almost never came out because of copy protection issues. DVD-A and, to a lower extent SACD, were marketing-wise seriously harmed by the same postponing issues.
It's all accelerating but I'm not sure that many people are buying DVD-A or even SACD...

Most are pretty happy with DVD - I wouldn't want to junk everything I bought the last 3 years for a new even better standard. And one that would this time force me to junk my monitor also?!

I would say the situation now is about the same as during the Quad debate... too much debate kills the market.

DVD had not yet hit the streets that Pioneer announced an 'even better' DVD and Toshiba another one ; DVD had just hit the streets that 'blue-ray' DVDs were announced ; DVD-R was announced and a myriad of variants were released (-RAM, -RW, +RW).

Unlike VHS or CD (these formats were new and not bettered extensions of older ones), I don't think there will be a clear winner this time. The market has changed: more people, more different needs (supposedly) and always faster, faster, faster.

Some CD recorders do record at x52 - great! But most cds don't stand the vibrations... and explode inside the recorder.

What kind of a future is that?
