...your S tapes must be pretty expensive!
You'll get no quality uplift in using D tapes over S ones - especially when recording in VHS only.

If you're in Europe, try using the TDK XP-Pro: S tape, very rugged and good quality. Better quality is the Maxell BQ S tapes - slightly more expensive, to be found in pro shops only but not as resistant if you plan to record over and over and over on 'em.

Close enough are the Fuji (US and Japan only).
