Browse through the many posts already placed on this forum.

In a nutshell:
The iLink port on DVHS recorders allows to digitally transfer films made with a DV or miniDV camera directly to the MPEG encoder of the DVHS deck.
Using the port thus allows you to avoid a digital to analog and analog to digital cycle, which would degrade the original signal.

But beware: the iLink port on all EU and US DVHS decks does NOT output a digital signal: the said port is INPUT ONLY.

Efforts by all to change this sad fact have to this day all failed.
