Subject: Copying S-VHS/VHS to D-VHS

I'm thinking of bying a digital video recorder.
The only reasin is that I want to be able to make the most perfect copies of existing VHS/S-VHS tapes.
Does anyone have any experience with this or could tell me what kind of loses of picture quality van be expected?
