Robert,
We in Israel are very aware of these topics and until the latest intifada started, we had the time, money and energy to continue with our excavations. As to the Sinai, as usual traditions tend to rule over science and people continue to return to time honored sites, real or imagined. If you want to know the latest in antiquity-murder, the Wakf who governs the Temple Mount is known to have ravaged excavations during this intifada on the mount to eliminate any and all evidence that the it was the ancient Jewish temple. Because of all the political turmoil, and the respect Israelis have for religious sites (the Arabs razed the area 700 years ago and built mosques there, so the could forever claim the area regardless of history - as they today in Jericho by burning a 1500 year old synagogue) and the financial times, we have not been able to enter and see just what kind of destruction they have done. We have seen tons of "debris" removed from Herod's stable dumped in East Jerusalem. This debris contains pottery shards over 3000 years old.
Hope this answers some of your questions. In the meantime, the world only focuses on what the media points to and all of our heritages are not as important, it seems, as guns and bloodshed.
G-d of Abraham pray for us all!
Sarah
