If the source of these summaries is legit, then they were never intended to be released to the public in toto, but rather to provide information for teasers for each episode. So,perhaps something happens during ep. 20 to alter Spike's quest. Perhaps the demon imposes a quid pro quo on Spike: ensouling as the price for dechipping. Or at the least, Spike must prove himself worthy of a soul. Why this price? Because a soul is about the last thing Spike would want, or thinks he wants. Evil demon indeed.

Just guessing, of course. I had made a bet with myself that Spike's price for being dechipped would be mortality.
