I agree with you, I've been dying to see them get that chip out, or disable it, or whatever.

I doubt that the result will be completely straightforward with regard to good or evil, though. It seems to me the best way to maintain the dramatic tension with the Spike character is to keep him gray. On the one hand, I don't see them having him vamp out and going on a rampage killing people, because I think that would be just too serious for the audience to still hold out hope that he might eventually find his way back to the light -- and that possibility is what creates the complexity and tension in the character. But I also think it's unlikely that he'll become reliably and consistently good -- there will probably still be plenty of instances where he is tempted and torn by his propensity to evil. The good news is, that whatever he does do for the good, will finally be credited to him and not that bloody chip.
