I kinda worked out what would happen if either Tara or Anya were killed. That meant that either Willow or Xander were going to go down a dark road of revenge. The demons have always been the ones with the label of evil on them, but I find that people if presented with the right circumstances could find that they had the capacity for evil the never would have considered. That's how we know the difference between evil and good, they can be compared. Willow has been going in this direction for years. Gone is the sweet, shy, schoolgirl, and what we have left is someone who wants to hang on to what they have that makes them feel special. The problem with that, is that there are consequences to their special skills. Tara had always been the one that made Willow think twice about what she was doing, if she is gone, I can see Willow becoming lost in a downward spiral of revenge, then power for the thrill of it. The question is can they save her from herself? And if she does enough evil, should she be saved at all?
