I've read all the spoilers and Dori's Spikefeed fo Seeing Red (I chose Dori cause she's biased and it would've been a tad gentler on Spike. Although, I found it to be just as disturbing.) So I have the same anxieties as you do. I know what it feels like for those few moments where you sit and think "Holy crap! I feel a little funny about all this!". At the same time it's great. For a show that you adore, to draw this type of reaction from you, well, I think that they are doing something right then.

And I don't know about the "unless they killed all the characters" bit. I just might watch that to see what the hell they would try with it.
