Subject: Basil Marcus to train in Singapore

The training ranks in Singapore will be strengthened by South African trainer Basil Marcus (pictured above) come December 2009.

Marcus started training in 2003 after a highly successful career as a jockey during which he rode in excess of 3,000 winners and was seven-time champion jockey in Hong Kong.

Marcus is currently training in Cape Town, South Africa, where he prepares more than 120 horses.

His major successes as a trainer include winning the Group 1 Cape Guineas and the Group 1 Cape Derby with Jay Peg ¡V who went on to win the 2008 Singapore Airlines International Cup and the 2008 Dubai Duty Free.

Other notable horses Marcus has trained include Desert Links (who has been imported into Singapore) who won the Group 1 Canon Gold Cup, Majestic Sun who captured the Group 3 Matchem Stakes and Countess Corlia, winner of the Group 3 Champagne Stakes.

He has consistently been among the leading trainers in Cape Town in the last three years.

Marcus will start off with about 40 South African horses which will arrive in Singapore between December 2009 and February 2010.
