France and England are so media-driven that they literally drove Princess Diana into a wall.

The Irish are so sexually uptight, esp. in the rural areas that they don't even talk about defecation.

Eating and weight? Have you seen the fashion models that come out of Europe? Who do you think sets that standard?

We like acquiring things? Really? that makes us unique!? My dog likes acquiring things, too. Wait - she's an American, I forgot.

All derivative of general Western civilization. And to further prove my point that there are a patchwork of smaller cultures that are independent of one another (thankfully so) I will quote MVD: "I gave you several examples, and these examples do not apply to all western civilizations. There are similarities, but this is not a fair assessment."

My point is that there are damn few Americans that fit the profile of the "mother culture" - we are all members of subcultures and those subcultures are cultures of their very own -

MVD: If you cannot see that this is all derivative an overlying culture, then more than likely you are being willfully blind.

Please tell me you can tell the difference between an Amish kid in Orange County, Indiana and a black kid from Watts in L.A.! The US is composed of many, many cultures - to say that they all conform to a mother culture or even all borrow a majority of their elements from a mother culture is to be willfully blind to the splendor that is the American patchwork quilt.

Also - class is culture. We had this discussion about 3 years ago when talking about the shirtless guys. Don't tell me that you've never watched Cops and marvelled at the insanity of the folks they're arresting. They're not nuts - they're members of a different culture whose behavior makes sense to their culture.

The original point to all of this was:

A) I don't want the world's cultures to disappear
B) It is facile in the extreme to hope that their disappearance will make the world a better place.

Want to make the world a better place?

1) hug your kids more.
2) tell your loved ones you love them more
3) treat everyone else at least as good as you'd like to be treated.

Blindly yours,

Mt. Healthy Mountaineer
