But I look at anime like I look at Doctor Who. Go for the stories, not the animation. If the story is good and engaging and you like it - watch it. If you only want special effects, watch Jar Jar in SW: I.

I guess the difference is that people watch Dr. Who, and overlook the special effects, and the Dr. Who people continually try to do better effects. No one gets so fascinated with Dr. Who's effects that they try to replicate the style over and over and over again without improvement. The Anime/manga people do just that. Voltron and Battle of the Planets are around 25 years old or so, yet anime/manga is still drawn the same way today as it was then.
