I agree. The book has such slow pacing, such as the years that went by while Frodo was waiting on Gandolf. I don't think it would have worked as well in the movie. I am enjoying the book, I have just reached the 'dreaded' council of Elrond.:) (I was stuck on that chapter for a while as a kid.)
I also like Merry and Pippen better in the movie, they seem so bland in the book. Frodo seems very much the same in the book as in the movie, although he is older in the book. All in all, so far I still feel the movie did a very good job of keeping the main elements of the book alive.
