Tolkien was great at symbolism and linguistics, but he wasn't the greatest writer on the Earth. He isn't even the greatest fantasy writer. Parts of the story did bog down a lot, his world wasn't very realistic in a lot of ways, and he was terrible at writing combat scenes. Usually he just had the main character involved in the combat go unconscious and have someone else later tell that character that a violent episode had occured.

I also felt the ringwraiths were better in the movie than in the book. Although the Weathertop scene in the movie was a weakness, it was an even bigger weakness in the book.
