It is a completely debatable point. There is no proof either way. Accusations of this sort have been around as long as Christianity has been around. As I stated earlier, that is the reason why the spear thrust was added to the Gospel of John - to combat those nasty rumors.

Personally, I think that if a man was actually crucified, then that man died. Crucifiction wasn't something people lived through, as a general rule.

However, there is a Gospel (non-canonical, obviously) that claims that someone died in Jesus' place, and that Jesus' brother James knew the truth.

Ultimately, since it is too long ago to know for sure (and people would continue to believe even if it were proven to be the case that he didn't really die), it is unimportant.

Personally, I think enough of the Bible has been shown to be doubtful that I have nothing but doubt for the book as a whole.

But as for the original point, it is debatable whether he died or not on the cross. There is no proof either way. Only the word of writers who wrote decades after the event and likely did not witness the event.

Was it doctored or faked? There is no way to know. Although I sure don't see how someone could survive the ordeal. But for all we know, the whole thing is fictional, as real as The Blair Witch Project.
