Subject: Saruman, Gandalf = Balrog? Maybe.
In reply to: Omega 's message, "Re: Saruman" on 19:42:58 12/21/01 Fri

Here is the section I referred to: "About 3000 he used his palantir and was trapped by Sauron; after this time, although he thought himself free, he was actually controlled by Sauron."

Evidence in The Silmarillion does suggest that Gandalf might be Maia (a Balrog is a Maia that sided with Morgoth [AKA Melkor]); If that is true, it wouldn't be hard to extrapulate that all of the Istari (including Saruman) were also Maia. Sauron is also Maia.

Whether or not the Istari are Maiar is debatable, considering Tolkien's penchant for using names over and over again - but Gandalf's real name, given to him in Valinor in his youth was Olórin. And Olórin is also one of the few Maiar that Tolkien named in The Valaquenta:

"Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin. He too dwelt in Lórien, but his ways took him often to the house of Nienna, and of her he learned pity and patience. Of Melian much is told in the Quenta Silmarillion. But of Olórin that tale does not speak; for though he loved the Elves, he walked among them unseen, or in form as one of them, and they did not know whence came the fair visions or the promptings of wisdom that he put into their hearts. In later days he was the friend of all the Children of Ilúvatar, and took pity on their sorrows; and those who listened to him awoke from dispair and put away the imaginations of darkness."

The Children of Ilúvatar mentioned above refer to the Elves and Men, for those not familiar with the term.
