Subject: The essence of memory...

Recently my wife finished reading one of my favorite fantasy books. We talked about it and how we remembered things very vividly from the book. We then got off on the subject of memory, for it occurred to us that we remembered the story almost as if we had really been there. Of course, the memory was planted by a bunch of words and our own imaginations. Yet, the memories linger, and it is making me wonder what the differences are between our own memories and those implanted by a story. Aside from this obvious difference, our minds don't really seem to distinguish all that much of a difference. We remember such stories with the same vividness that we might remember a scene from our childhood. Any thoughts?
