I think I answered your first question - but I'll try again. You are putting the fact that America as the world superpower and translating the hubris that that can create and imposing it on the local situation here in America's neighborhoods. It assumes too much, unless it is a recent immigrant who is offering the help and then that superpower hubris can come into affect. ("I ain't gonna take no help from no dang Mexican!")

I've done quite a bit of reading about Chomsky and, for the most part, I'm not fond of the man's economics or his politics. Many men can safely go from one field of endeavor to another (Reagan comes to mind - he was a sports announcer, an actor, a politician) and be competent or even wildly successful.

In my opinion, Chomsky is well-spoken and likes to say outrageous things and make outrageous claims and for that reason he is the darling of many people who would like to claim they are intellectuals. However, he often gets out of his areas of expertise and finds himself over his head. For example, he has claimed the kiling fields of the Khmer Rouge never happened. Based on what? No one knows, but he swears the Communist Vietnamese and the U.S. government conspired in the late 70s to concoct it.(for those that don't know the Vietnamese stopped the Khmer Rouge from completing their mass murder of all who were educated or who had lived in cities in the name of Communism)(also, we all know the wonderful relations the US and Vietnam would have had right after the war...and we all know that Jimmy carter was all about Human Rights Abuses!)

He helped to create the economic theory of libertarian socialism and that is the biggest bunch of unwieldy, unworkable economic mumbo jumbo that I've ever read. Even Marxism makes more sense to me than that! Much more sense (and you know how I feel about Marxism!)

Your quote from him is going to the area of sociology and I really, really think he should stick to linguistics - an area in which he is truly recognized as a master.

I did like your first part, though!
