The black man had no power, so he had no rights. Exactly true. Did he have a right to rights? No. No man does. We must fight for them. There is no all encompassing moral law that says that we must give every man rights. If there was, then every man would have the same rights as everyone else, but guess what, it doesn't work this way and never will.

Don't you get it? You do not make an argument by saying go and complain about the police in Mexico. Police may rule in these areas and they are likely to be totally corrupt. They have the power and as such citizens have no rights. This is exactly what I was saying. You are only agreeing with me. Thank you for proving my point.

What I am not saying is that this fundamental truth of human behaviour is good or bad. What I am saying is that this is how human beings work, and it would do everyone well to just admit it rather than cling to some ridiculous idealistic notion that we all have rights.

Sure, it is wonderful that we have a government that is supposed to protect a certain amount of rights, but it does not mean that we are entitled to them. Quite the contrary is actually true. We have only the rights we fight for and are powerful enough to defend. And if you follow recent trends, it seems obvious to me that the powerful of this country are slowly eroding away the lawfully protected "rights" of the weak, which is natural and to be expected.

Am I saying we should all praise this sort of behaviour? No. I'm just saying that is how it is, for better or for worse, and any rights that we think we have are nothing more than the illusions fostered by an idealistic philosophy. For example:

You have the "right" to free speech. Then, tomorrow, under martial law, declared by the government in order to combat terrorism, you are told not to make any comments in school in favor of peace in the world. Deciding to flaunt this convention, you speak in favor of peace. Three hours later you are in a holding tank with a gag around your mouth. What happened to your rights, Dale? The guys with the power just took them away didn't they? Did you ever have them to begin with? Of course not. You maintained the illusion of having rights, but it was just proven to you that in a matter of seconds those rights could be revoked. So tell me, what are rights and what makes you think you have them?
