There are many ways to make a story believable in the sense that it has a true basis in reality. I think it is slightly limiting to cling to only one avenue to this means, being the fight in the face of overwhelming odds. There is a place for this sort of avenue, but there are many others. I think if modern authors are guilty of anything, it is not the hollywood ending so much as it is being bereft of imagination.

Stories must have at their heart a struggle that everyone can relate to. Conan offered the struggle against overwhelming odds, fighting for momentary glory. Yet, there are many conflicts within a man's life that might find their way into fantasy literature. I would like to see more stories that pertain to real human struggle, set in a fantasy world, rather than the standard boy becomes man and good vanquishes evil etc. I think an author should come to the table with something fundamental (a thesis, if you will, a theme) to say before he ever writes a story. The story should then encapsulate whatever he thinks about the world, or reality, not offer some generic bubble gum candy that is quickly chewed up and spit out after it loses its flavor.
