I am not too familiar with most modern fantasy -- so I can not comment on it. But I think the best fantasy authors in the early to mid 20th century, understood that fantasy needs enough reality to be credible.

Modern fantasy has really forgotten that aspect of fantasy. Most go for the Hollywood ending, and many go for tedious reworkings of standard plots. Many emulate Tolkien without bothering to understand what made Tolkien's story work.

I saw Dawn of the Dead (the remake) last night, and it was fantastic. The heroes fought even though they had no chance of winning. They fought for the moment, the last few seconds of life that they could have. I like that in a story. I do think a lot of the early fantasy fiction authors understood the power of that sort of story.
