Subject: The formation of culture

We have talked about American culture and world culture on here, and I am beginning to wonder where people get their ideas about what culture really is about and where it comes from.

It is my understanding that culture is basically a set of like characteristics that roughly defines a group. Therefore, American culture might be roughly described as: hard-working, paranoid about sex, freedom loving, and obsessed with entertainment. Though, within the American culture, there are many many subcultures. There are the Gamers, the Goths, the Nerds, the Blue Collars, the Christians, the Sports Fanatics, etc.

Did these sub-groups suddenly lose their identity because we were able to make a vast, sweeping judgement about their over-all culture? I don't think so. Not only can smaller cultures exist, all are able to change and evolve accordingly.

The fear of some world order destroying cultures is quite ludicrous. At the very least, it might change culture. But, as long as there is difference in men, there will be multiple and glorious varieties of culture...
