Having worked on nearly every brand of laptops, here are my recommendations:

I heartily agree with Xanthor's comments. You need to decide if a laptop is what you really need. If you're wanting to be able to work on stuff anywhere you go, then a laptop is for you. If you're just wanting a way to "transfer" files between work and home, go out and splurge on a 1GB Flash Drive instead of spending bookoo bling on a laptop.

You definitely need to be prepared to purchase an extended warranty. I recommend 3 years minimum. It's worth every penny. Laptops are hard to work on.

Here are my recommendations based on quality and durability.

1) IBM Thinkpads - These suckers are a little more expensive, but they're very dependable and don't break down very often.
2) Dell - Dells are nice and cheap nowadays. They're good laptops, but they're much more prone to breakdowns nowadays than they were a few years ago. Dell's quality has gone downhill a lot recently.
3) HP - HPs are pretty nice laptops. What I worry about nowadays is that they most likely have Compaq parts in them. That's a bad thing.

However, you can get a really nice HP laptop and an HP All-in-one printer at that evil department store for $999.99. That's a great deal, but I doubt you can get an extended warranty with it. Might wanna check some of the electronics stores for the same deal.

Never ever never ever never buy a Compaq or a Gateway.

Above all other laptops, I highly recommend Apple laptops. However, that's a huge computing shock and you have to be prepared for the change. :)
