Subject: Resignation

Adilbrand and I were talking about this yesterday and I have come to a conclusion. In games of pure logic, such as chess, resignation is generally considered (in this culture at least) to be a perfectly acceptable and honorable way to finish a game. In a game of logic, it makes no real sense to play out an ending that both sides can see clearly enough. Doing so only insults the game on some level and makes the game a pantomime with both players going through the motions. Resignation in this situation is what I think of as "bowing to the master", and perfectly honorable to both sides.

Now, resignation in matters of emotional significance and games that are not purely logical, like racquetball, is generally considered bad form. I, for instance, have been skunked 15-0 in racquetball, but refused to give up despite the point deficit. Defeat in these instances is not always as certain as in a game of pure logic.

Adilbrand might argue that resignation is an insult in both forms, but I think there is a crucial distinction here. Any thoughts?
