Subject: Raising the Ban on Religious Discussion Again

It seems to me that those participating in the religious discussions tend to have their own agenda and don't really listen to the folks they are replying to.

Mark's recent post shows this very well, although examples can be found on all sides: In it, Mark takes one of the Mountaineer's comments out of context to prove Mountaineer wrong: "One's religious beliefs are not necessarily a product of culture." If one looks at the statement in context, then one sees that Mountaineer meant a product of one's own culture, for all of Mountaineer's examples point in that direction.

Mountaineer's point was easily seen in its context, and just as easily ignored by taking the statement out of its context. Mark just wanted to be right, so he took a statement out of context just to prove he was right, even though the readers knew Mountaineer didn't intend the point Mark contended Mountaineer made.

This renders the argument utterly futile, leading to arguments about semantics and phrasing.

Thus, unless we agree to look at each other's replies as a whole, and quit quoting out of context, and quit expecting everyone to be utterly precise with a post that hasn't been intended to be that precise, I am again raising the ban on religious discussion.

Anyone posting anything further on that topic will be banned until such an agreement is made.
