Subject: Beauty, porn, and the modern woman.

Recently, a certain problem has been called to my attention. I just perused the book The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf and The Power of Beauty by Nancy Friday. At first I did not really understand what the women were saying, for it is an issue that is completely foreign to me, like a white man may not understand how it feels to be oppressed, neither did I relate to the force that images of beauty and sex has upon the modern female.

Has anyone else given thought to this? The point is this: Empthasis upon female sexual allure has been grossly taken advantage of by those desiring to control women's spending behaviour in the market place so much so that women suffer a great deal in the face of what it means to be "beautiful". Not only are these forces detrimental, but what it means to be beautiful is then associated with what it means to be sexy, so much so that women who do not measure up to the Cindy Crawford pictures do not feel sexy, and even have a difficult time in sexual situations because of an overwhelming feeling that they are somehow sexually inadequate. This leads women down a self destructive path that promotes their inadequacies while holding out air-brushed, mass-made-up pics of women that are supposed to be the ideal. Women, as a result, are altering their bodies with plastic surgery, starving themselves or purging to stay thin, and racked with feelings of self loathing.

Now, there is nothing wrong with beauty and sex, but as men, do we think of the effect images and emphasis upon these sort of things has upon a women? Just thought I'd bring it up to generate some discussion. Any thoughts?
