To answer the original question:

Here's some things that are new:

-there are plans in the works to connect Indianapolis to Evansville with an extension of Interstate 69, which currently ends on Indy's Northeast side.

-The Indianapolis Colts want a new stadium. The rumor mill has it that if they do not get it, they will move to Los Angeles, a city that desperately wants an NFL team and has financing for a new stadium.

-We have a new property tax system in Indiana. It is based on the real estate value of your home and it is not working out as well as hoped because, in my opinion, our Governor ignored the problem for five years (he was ordered to fix it in five years by the Indiana TAx court) and slapped together a poorly thought through solution in 2-3 months, squandering the 60 months he was given)

-COlumbus is getting a Menard's out on 46.

-Wal-mart moved across the street and the new Wal-Mart is large that rumor has it that a small town was started in electronics when several people got lost and could not get out. I heard they'll soon be electing a mayor and will be building a school in the school-supplies section.

-Lowe's built a store in Columbus while you were gone, and then abandoned it to go to another site.

-Kohl's will be opening a store in the old Lowe's site.

-Hill's is gone, as is the movie theater. A Super-Target will be built there and the old Target will be abandoned.

-They are still trying to figure out a way to make the Crump financially viable.

-ARvin's merged with a company called Meritor and most of its high-paying management positions out of town. There are constantly rumors that Arvin-Meritor will close its Columbus operations.

-there are also constant rumors about Cummins.

-Golden Foundry closed up.

-COSCO nearly moved to Greenwood, but decided to stay.

-Columbus East had a girls basketball team make it to the final four a few years ago.

-Columbus North graduate Tony Stewart has won a NASCAR championship, raced in several Indy 500s and made a name for the town of Rushville because he was born there and everyone thinks he also grew up there, even though he grew up in downtown Columbus from the age of 3.

-and, if you like to hunt deer, sometimes the state lets hunters hunt deer in state parks because they've had to spend money to feed them in the winter because they've consumed all of the forage since their population is so dense. This has gotten some people all worked up because I guess they'd rather see Bambi starve than get shot.
