How can it confirm things I didn't know?

The open-minded learn new things to add or subtract to or from their preconceived notions. Their knowledge is expanded and changed, not confirmed.

Growth in knowledge, involving change, is a more admirable trait than simply going along with one's preconceptions and present knowledge, pleased that everything one sees confirms those biased notions.

I, personally, hope I never reach a point where everything I see simply confirms what I already know. To me, that would mean I have closed my mind. To me, that would mean I am learning nothing new. To me, that would mean I have become a Lotus-Eater.

I do not have a bone to pick with you in particular. It is just I hear the same comment ("What I learned generally confirmed that which I already knew about life and such.") used by students to justify a lot of closed-minded concepts and actions. I have a bone to pick with the sentence itself. It is a snobbish and arrogant thing to say. Very American, I think.
