I think you've made Luther's argument stronger than he would have made it. It has always been my understanding that he de-emphasized Revelations individual prophecies because they were extremely symbol-filled and the symbolism was not readily apparent to those reading it in his day. Revelation was used to promote the sales of indulgences and was used to scare people into being good, and he really felt that wasn't its purpose. Rather, he took comfort that, in the end, God takes care of those who believe and, in the end, He and His win out.

However, I felt the "Mark of the Beast" comment was appropriate in that it will be very much the reaction of millions of Christians and they will be very reluctant to participate
