Let us take a hypothetical situation and apply it to the present argument.

Yam ibn Saud, a ruthless war monger in D&D, needs his people to rally behind him for his war against the X's. The Saudian people know very little about the X's. So, Yam ibn Saud informs them using the press and other media tools. He tells them how evil they are. He says they eat babies and sacrifice kittens to Yogath Hob. Not only that, but the X people are forced to do this because their leader is a ruthless man named H who will kill them if they don't. H. is not only ruthless to his own people, but he may be developing a horrible spell called "Big Blast of Fire" that will incinerate the Saudian people. The thing about the Big Blast of Fire is that it could happen anywhere, at anytime, and is highly secret, so secret in fact that invasion of Xland is almost the only way to find the threat and eliminate it. Think of your children and everything you have worked for! Because Saud tells you this: The X's hate you very much and would sooner kill you than give you the time of day. They will sacrifice your babies to their heinous gods and defecate on your mother. In fact they hate Saudians so much they picket and march in the streets. Here are several small pictures of them doing just that! All they need is the Big Blast of Fire and they will control everything we hold sacred!

To war! We must! Everything we hold dear is at stake. Our peace and prosperity. Our safety. Sure, the X's have lots of gold reserves that would be nice to have, but look at the threat they pose!

Do you think Yam ibn Saud would be successful in rallying his people? What if a few well placed "pseudo attacks by the X's" were engineered by Yam ibn Saud to really scare his own people into action? Think that might push them over the edge?


The point of this story is that had we heard nothing, we would not be motivated to act. Therefore our outrage and indignation is mostly based upon what we have heard. The truth is that we would know nothing of Saddam or Iraq were it not for television, newspapers, and radio. And please, let us not be so naive as to assume that these media conglomerates actually tell us everything that we need to know, everything that is factual. And please let us not be so naive as to believe that these corporations are not controlled by other agencies with self preservation in their hearts, with agendas on their desks, and axes to grind. To do so would be to invite Hitler into our very living rooms.
