Subject: Conan not Superman in Howard's Stories
In reply to: mt. healthy mountaineer 's message, "RE: Conan" on 14:18:08 05/23/02 Thu

The similarity in names is due to Howard's idea that the Hyborian Age existed on Earth in a forgotten time, and that strains of humanity remembered the names in later epochs and gave them to lands in more recent eras.

Conan in Howard's stories was not the Superman the TOR series makes him out to be. He ran away from as many fights as he won. He didn't even bother to battle Akivasha the Vampiress in "Hour of the Dragon", for example. The character was much more believable in Howard's stories, especially in the tales of Conan's younger days. He very nearly did die in several stories. "A Witch Shall be Born" comes to mind as an example of one of Howard's stories where Conan nearly bit the dust.
