The real point is not about protecting a man's right to declare his beliefs. It is about protecting another man's right not to be compelled to mimick these beliefs. Religious strictures by the government are generally of this nature.

If I were to send my son to a public school, I should feel that I had the right not to have him coerced in some way to give allegiance to god.

This nation was founded on principles of liberty, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness, not god. God was acknowledged by these men, but the more reading I do, the less their god seems to be Christian, and by no means were they "Jesus freaks". Jefferson's god seems many times to be the god of natural order and nothing more.

The reasons for keeping god in church and not introducing him into public arenas should be painfully obvious. When we begin to merge the two we create a belief system wherein the will of god becomes legislated and may in fact justify just the sort of atrocities spoken of in your earlier post about Bush.
