Subject: Review: Doctor Who, Neverland

Well, Big Finish has been producing Doctor Who audio stories for a couple years now. I decided, awhile back, to pre-order the 8th Doctor story, Neverland, awhile back and I finally got it in the mail.

The story itself is a bit slow at start, but it develops into something interesting. There are obvious references to other 8th Doctor stories I did not order (his Dalek story, among others).

Having listened to this, and I expect its own observations are adequate in the character of the 8th Doctor, the 8th Doctor has become the cosmic "Peter Pan." He is the kid who didn't grow up, who also falls in love (from what I can tell) with his Wendy... (his current companion, who has the nickname of Charlie, and she appears to have been someone he picked up in the 1930s who was meant to die and he saved.. causing wreck to timelines..)

The reason why I chose the story was the subject matter: The 8th Doctor is forced to return to Gallifrey, to help President Romana to solve problems with the breaking "Web-of-Time." To do so, they have to go to a place that was posited to exist -- a place of "Negative Time" or "Neverland." There are various aspects to the story which seems to be revelations dealing with previous stories, but they also deal with revelations about the history of Gallifrey itself. In the end, the Doctor does save the universe (again), but at a great cost.. at the very end, a cliff hanger, the Doctor is no longer the Doctor.. the Doctor has become the personification of the "end of time" itself. What this will mean and how this will be solved is unclear. It appears Romana will be in the next story, as with Rassilon (who makes his way in this one as well). The "solution" I expect will be some sort of exorcism -- although, I am already thinking this "exorcism" will in itself be the cause of the creation of the Valeyard persona as we have seen in the Trial of a Timelord. It will actually be able to make the "Trial" problems with who the Valeyard is -- make much more sense.

Either way, I thought this adventure was much better than the "Sirens of Time" which was their first CD (4 parter with 3 Doctors.. who only team up in the 4th part). I am curious to getting a few more of their stories -- their Dalek stories with the 7th Doctor, the Brigadier stories they have with the 6th and 8th Doctor, and a few more of the 8th Doctor's stories..

My rating, after a first time hearing of the story: B to B+. I might grow to like it more, or like it less -- it is hard to tell how well this will play for "more" listenings..
