Subject: Review: Invaders From Mars (Doctor Who)

The second 8th Doctor story that I have listened to was not as good as the first. It was at best an average story (so my rating is a C) which had potential, but failed to live up to it. The theme of the story was good: what if, during the 1930's broadcast of the War of the Worlds, a real alien invasion unrelated to the broadcast as also underway? That being the premise, the rest of the story fails to live up to the originality.

I think one of the problems with the story was the attempt of the author to make it seem like a 1930's radio drama ala The Shadow or The Green Hornet, instead of giving it the full Doctor Who feel. Thus, it was at times, imo, too silly an approach to the story, and did not take its material seriously enough.

The Doctor once again stumbles upon a corpse, and attempts to take the place of the one who died -- a private investigator -- to stumble upon a conspiracy surrounding Nazis, Russian spies, Gangsters, and a crashed alien ship. Ultimately the broadcast of the War of the Worlds is used by the Doctor -- to convince the aliens who come looking for the remains of the crashed ship/and then invasion of earth that a more powerful menace is out there. While at first the bluff is succesful, in the end, the Doctor makes a mistake and it fails, but soon after that, the story ends with a very simple ending..

So I will give it a C, the Doctor does not seem to be as actively involved with the story (especially the first half) that I would have liked. Paul McGann's Doctor still shows more of his persona and charm, and I think he makes for a good Doctor, but I am hoping to hear some of his other stories, and find out how engaging the newest seasons of Doctor Who are (albeit on audio).
