Because he cannot admit that the book is not filled with the mistakes of men, and therefore cannot be written by god. It is really so painfully simple. How can it be that the divine creator, super-genius of the universe, master of all things, knower of all things can create one book that is supposed to be a guide for all men and yet have it filled with such hopeless contradictions and flaws that no two people can even agree on its meaning? If he is all powerful, don't you think he could have at least created a book that could be understood, or was his intention to mislead? :)

The fact is, he has only scrutinized it and found what he wanted to find. I have seen the book from both angles, and when applying critical analysis to it, it does not stand the test of Godhood. I doubt many men who have thoroughly studied it objectively could say differently.

Take this example. Suppose you have a very learned scholar who has never heard of Christianity. You hand him the bible and ask him for a thorough review. Do you honestly think he will hand it back to you and say, "Surely it is the word of god!"? More than likely he will say, "It is a worthy book, with some apt philosophy, but other than that it is a sketchy history of a myriad number of tribes and peoples.
