My belief is that spirits generally do not want to scare people.

Tapping/knocking on walls:
They knock on walls to get ones attention. There can be many reasons as to why they would want to make contact. It would probably be an easier task to stir up enough energy to pound on a wall rather than try to show themself to you.

Rapping/pounding on walls:
Poltergeist-like activity could include ongoing heavy poundings/rappings on a wall or object. In these cases, there could be many reasons for it. A couple of reasons
may be yes, to scare you or/and they REALLY want to get your attention.

The answers can't be found without a complete investigation.

Whether they be light tappings/knocks or heavy rappings/pounding, there could be several logical
explanations behind them.
