The town I live in, Mount Carroll, Illinois, was laid out 170yrs. ago with the "supernatural traveler" in mind. I was told the old belief was that a spirit can not move over a body of water. The city graveyard is on a hill overlooking the downtown, but "protected" by the Wakarusha river that wraps almost completly around the entire chunk of land, imprisoning 7,500 graves. The un-wise people that chose to build on cemetary hill were looked down upon by the rest of the town until fairly recent times. Every October for the last 4yrs. graveyard tours are offered by the chamber of commerce ,these have to be "historical" in nature to be tolerated by the community as not being "disrespectful to the dead.
