Subject: Hi Chloe/Hand Info

Hi Chloe,

About ten years ago while conducting a Girl Scout ceremony I discovered that I could not make the Girl Scout sign as my right hand would not cooperate. And I am right handed. I was also having a good deal of pain in my neck on the right side. The neuro diagnosed a condition called distonia/dystonia or writer's cramp along with a pinched nerve in my neck. He stated that these were both separate conditions. I thought that highly coincidental, but I wasn't about to question the specialist.
Jump ahead to about a year and a half ago. My right hand continued to remain about the same: cramping when trying to write, horrible handwriting that at times is barely legible. Now the problem appears to be encompassing the entire right side up to the neck. I have developed a constant stiffness in my right arm that is particularly prominent in the area from the elbow to the wrist.
I return to the neuro and he has me go for a brain MRI just to rule out anything. The MRI comes back with multiple areas of active lesions. Now the neuro says that this looks like MS. He is pretty surprised by the whole thing. The truth is that I never shared with him my many aches and pains as I figured this was a part of aging and that I was not doing it too well.
The most prominent feature in my hand is the difficulty I have with writing that begins as soon as I try to hold a pen b/c of the cramping. There is also some problem with getting a secure grip on an object. Peeling potatoes has b/c a problem because of the cramping. I hope this info answers your question.
Jeanne
