Subject: Do you want a Pit Bull? Please read.

Hello everyone.I am an owner of 3 rescued pit bulls and I'd like to say a few words with the hope you all take a moment, before taking home a dog of this breed.

To those who are thinking to buy from a back yard breeder.. please make a trip to the shelter and look at all the wonderful pit bulls waiting to enter the euthanasia room. You won't understand what is happening to this breed till you hear these dogs crying for attention in their kennels or pushing their body againts the metal, hoping you will take them home and give them the life they deserve. If you can handle it, hold the puppies.Little lives that will end at a few weeks old.Their only fault is that someone had no respect for life.A few puppies were sold, the rest was thrown out.Others are adults, they lived to be bred, kept on chains, without human affections or a a moment of happyness.Too old to be bred again or their owners just decided they weren't worth feeding anymore. Many were starved, beaten, abused to the point they should not have an ounce of trust for the human race.Yet, they wag their tails frantically, if you make eye contact. After all you looked at them and that is the only attention they probably received since they were born. Something in their eyes lights up, so much pain in life but the bulldog soul is still there, it stays forever.
This is the result of back yard breeding. One you see it, you won't forget it.

There isn't a such thing as an "almost decent breeder", either someone breed with ethic or not. When you see no mention of health tests, dogs that aren't within the breed standards, advertising of "rare colors" or "big heads, wide chest", no contracts, people just offering dogs right and left, no spay and neuter prior placement of pet quality dogs, no titles and no screening of the buyer whatsoever...this is back yard breeding. If you are thinking to buy a dog, please ask what you should be looking for, in a breeder.Unless you plan to compete in sports, conformation or any sport where you might need a papered dog, please open your home to an unwanted, sound pit bull in shelter or rescue.Don't think that good working dogs and awesome pets can't be found in rescue.
There are perfectly healthy and beautiful dogs without a home, whose temperament is faultless. These dogs deserve a home before any litter is planned.

Do not contribute to the overpopulation or support back yard breeding, be responsible and make the right choice.
We are about to loose these dogs, irresponsible ownership and back yard breeding are the reasons.
If, after learning about the reality of back yard breeding, you insist on contributing to the overpopulations or supporting poor breeding practicies...you are doing the breed a disservice.
Take a look at this page:

A WORD ON RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP:

Every dog of every breed deserve a responsible owner but, when it comes to this breed, there is no room for mistakes. One mistake, you lose your dogs and jeopardized the whole breed.
What are these mistakes:

- Onwership of ill tempered dogs.

American Pit Bull Terriers are dogs with super temperament. Their attitude toward people is amazing, their tolerance to rough handling is outstanding, nothing come close to a sound pit bull.

Growling to no threat or normal handling, guarding, snapping and excessive dominance or other behaviors on this line aren't what this breed is about.Nervy dogs who react to minimum stress are trouble. We are not talking about ill mannered, rough and pushy dogs who only need some serious work, we are talking about unprovoked human aggression.

If you come across or own such dog, you have two options. One is to euthanize the dog and the other is to do everything in your power to prevent an accident, which most likely mean to confine the dog at home. One mistake can make the headlines and give us all a hard time.

-responsability and handling:

Your bulldog is most likely to be dog aggressive to some extent. There is no such thing like off leash in public areas, roaming, fence jumping and so on.You are responsible for what your dog do, at any time.Dogs will act like dogs and you are the one with the brain, use it.These dogs are escape artist and it is your responsability only to provide the appropriate confinement.Crates cost money and so do kennels but when you decide to bring home a bulldog you must be ready to provide all this.

When in public, have full control of your dog.A little lunging and barking can and will happen, it is your job to minimize it.Never allow or give your dog the chance to harm someone's pet.The hate for this breed is enormous already, nobody need to experience what is caused by irresponsible ownership.

Spaying and neutering is a part of responsible ownership as well.Unless you have purchased a dog from a reputable breeder and want to compete under certain registries, you do not need an intact animal. There is absolutely no need of unwanted litters.

Learn how to break up a fight, especially if you have a multiple dog home.

-You in public:

You will meet many people who will accuse you of owning a vicious animal. They might change direction to avoid your dog or simply tell you they think this breed should not exsist.Don't let anger to be your first reaction.

Take the time to be a breed advocate, by being responsible and by attempting to educate their ignorance. You won't change everbody's mind but you must try.Sometime people buy the news agenda and propaganda and need help to understand what this breed is really about.

You do us all a favor when you politely attempt to explain this breed.Yelling and swearing isn't gonna help, the public perseption of pit bull owners is already sadly mistaken.Be the better person and show the world that us, pit bull owners, can be responsible and educated.

Education is our goal.If you have a sound dog, take it out in public and show it off.You want people to see the truth behind the myths and news propaganda. If possible, enter your dog to the test provided by the American Temperament Test Society. It helps the breed by raising its documented score (which is very high already).Do the same with AKC's CGC (Good Canine Citizenship). These are certification that you have to be proud to earn and might help you in case of trouble with neighbors, authorities or home insurance.

Help us in the fight against BSL (Breed Specific Legsilation) by being a careful owner.

I see back yard breeders here, clueless people new to the breed asking to buy dogs without even knowing where they come from.To own a pit bull require knowledge.
If you wish to know more about these dogs, please feel free to e-mail me at bulldoggy@prodigy.net
I can provide links to very informative sites, forums where you can ask any questions or rescue info. You can be helped to do the right thing. Before buying, think about one pit bull you can safe from an almost certain death.Look at your local shelter or contact a reputable rescue.
Thanks to anyone who understands the trouble this breed is in and want to take responsability.
