Like Jenn I call in for my messages at least every couple of hours. I have a VM at home so don't need to pay the phone co. on that too. You could buy a reasonable anwsering machine with VM and an access number to retreive your calls from elsewhere: I always return calls from client's home's.
Tips, gifts, my take on it is NOT TO EXPECT IT! Whatever happens will be a nice surprise but I would not look for it becasue most peole are paying usually good rates anyway and unless there is a holiday (which may get you some cookies!) I always add a holiday fee to compensate.
