you did not state which engine, if petrol though, have a close look at the idle control valve, if dirty it will stick in the closed position and the engine will simply die when it should come to idle. Soak it in petrol overnight then lubricate with a thin oil it is easy to remove and refit. If things are then slightly better then you know your on the right track, simply repeat the process, it worked for me.
